VACATION, maybe? (part 2)

TUESDAY (March 19) we got up and headed to BYU (aka Cougarland) to go bowling. That is the one thing we do every time we go to Utah. The boys LOVE it! After we play games at the arcade and just have a great time. Then we head up to Cougar Eat and grab a BYU Creamery Cookies and Cream milk and head out.
Bowling was great fun! Even Bacon played this time, though not the entire time. He got bored pretty quickly and ran all over with 5 adults taking turns chasing after him! We all had a lot of fun and made some good memories!

After bowling we headed down to MOAB, UT to have a little more family fun, or did we? We checked into our hotel and the boys LOVED IT! It had 2 beds separated by a counter with a sink, small refrigerator, microwave, etc., so they felt like they had their own space. AND it had a large window seat, a pad of paper with a pen (Pach wrote and drew pictures on every piece for us) and about 100 drawers! Those got filled with all sorts of stuff.
WEDNESDAY we headed out, got our rented jeep, made lunches and went off roading! It was a long 1 mile! Bacon had decided to get sick Tuesday night. He was so hot and threw up a few times. He and I slept together and poor Tim, being the great dad and husband he is, slept perpendicular to Pach and Pickle at the bottom of their bed. :(  So by the morning and a dose of Tylenol later, Bacon seemed better so we continued with our vacation.
We went on a fairly tame loop and made it through. It was definitely more than I even liked! My stomach does not do well with ups and downs and really bouncy things which this was! Bacon, still not feeling 100%, fussed most of the time and poor Pach, he inherited my stomach so he wasn’t too happy. Pickle LOVED it though as did Tim. Guess he inherited Tim’s stomach (which is a good thing). Actually, Bacon would have loved it if he hadn’t been sick. So on the way back to dropping Pach, Bacon and myself at the hotel, we stopped at a park for lunch. There Pickle had so much fun playing he decided he’d rather play at the hotel than go back out with dad. So Tim ended up going out by himself for a few hours while I sat at the hotel with one sick-o and two super excited little boys. All in all it wasn’t too bad.

Dinner was very exciting. The boys LOVED the cowboy decorations all over the place, like the boot with flowers in it. And Pickle knocked over his cup of apple juice all over the floor. I look forward to the day when we go out to eat and nothing falls on the floor.

VACATION, maybe? (part 1)

We left for Utah on March 15th for a baby blessing. Tim’s brother, Ryan and his wife Rachel, had a little girl, Connie, in February. They decided to bless the baby on March 17.
All went well on the drive up there. The boys were good the whole way but like us all, ready to get OUT OF THE CAR! after a 14 hr drive. They were especially excited to see Grandpa and Grandma. We stayed at a hotel, which gave us all plenty of room, mostly…. Grandpa and Grandma had Pach and Pickle stay with them, so they were full but Tim and I got our own beds as we only had Bacon in the pack-n-play in our room.
SUNDAY was the blessing and it was nice. I didn’t actually hear any of it as I had Bacon in the foyer, keeping him entertained and somewhat quiet. Basically there just wasn’t anyone around to distract is all. Then he threw-up. Yep, all over the floor. Somehow he missed the couch, his shoes, my shoes, the diaper bag, etc. I got Tim and he found all the stuff to clean it up. We thought it was a one time thing but on hindsight, it was a bad omen!!
After church we headed back to the hotel to change and then just hang out. Tim, Grandpa and the boys headed to a nearby park to play and stay out of the house. Grandma held baby Connie, while Ryan and Rachel slept and I just hung out.
MONDAY was a nice day. All the boys slept with Grandpa and Grandma so Tim and I could leave early and go skiing! A mostly all day date! It was really fun! We went to Alta. I had only been skiing once before, years ago with an ex-boyfriend who made it as horrible as possible. Tim set the whole thing up and got to spend a lot of time skiing, which he has done his whole life. After we got our ski gear, we headed down to where I would be having my ski class. I went down a little slope with him coaching me and back up via the rope pull. Not really that much fun (the rope pull). It about yanked my arm off!!!  I decided I was done until my class started. I needed to conserve energy and the rope pull was not going to help with that!
As we sat waiting a few instructors came by, asked if we were going to take a class, if I’d been skiing before, etc. I told them, “Yes, I am taking a class. I went skiing a long time ago, once down a bunny hill. I just went down that little hill right there.” They each looked at me and said if I could go down that little hill without falling I should be in a different class, so I got bumped up! I had been in the beginners class but was bumped up to the “green” class. Yippee!!
My ski instructor was Jim from Chicago. He teaches skiing in the winters and gives tours of Wrigley Field in the Spring/Summer. There were just two of us in the class, a girl named Gemma from England. We laughed so hard! It was really a lot of fun. He made skiing look so easy! It definitely wasn’t as hard as I had thought but not as easy as he made it look! Eventually he said we were good enough to go on an actual run, so off we went!
I made it down but had a few problems and needed help. I was a little bummed about that. My knee had been hurting since the half-marathon I ran earlier in the month. However, it had felt good for the previous 2 to 3 days so I thought it would do ok but it didn’t. By the end of the 2 1/2 hours my left thigh would spasm every time I my left leg to turn on and my knee wasn’t holding up. To turn right you push with your left foot, kind of like you would on roller blades or ice skates. Anyway, my knee wouldn’t hold and I ended up falling. By that point my left leg was done but I still had half a run left!! Jim came and helped me. He ended up skiing backwards, holing onto one end of the poles, while I skied forward while holding the other end of the poles on my hips. He would push on the poles help me turn and get down the hill. And my left leg still didn’t want to cooperate!! But we made it! And that was it for me. I had fun but my leg wasn’t going to do anything anymore. It was sore for a couple days :(
Tim had been skiing the entire time I was in my class. We had both hoped to ski one run together but we couldn’t. But all that means is we have to go skiing again another time. So it’s not all bad. I changed into shoes and read while he skied for another hour. We both had a lot of fun and it was a fun day!
Me all ready to go!

Somewhere at Alta.

It was a fun time!
We headed back and ended up going swimming with most of Tim’s family. The boys were swimming with Grandma and Grandpa when we got back, so we joined them. Then Tim’s sister, Sarah and her husband Fred joined us with their little girl, who the boys have named Baby Jessie (after Jessie in Toy Story 2). It was a great fun! Totally physical and exhausting for us but a lot of fun!
And just because life can never be dull with little children, as Sarah and family sat around our hotel room with our family eating Cafe Rio, Bacon grabbed Tim’s Apple Beer and spilled it all over himself and the floor! The bottle also got him in the face. Never a dull moment with him!

Phoenix Half-Marathon

Awhile ago, a friend in the running group I’m in, Allison, signed up for the Phoenix Half-Marathon. She told us all about it and one by one, we all signed up to run the half with her. We started training in December and it was fun, hard but fun.

Yesterday, March 1, we all packed up in various cars and headed up to Phoenix for some fun, food and racing! We went straight to packet pick-up, which was fun. Am I nerdy for thinking that? We got arm warmers in our goodie bag!! I’ve always wanted some but never purchased any because I am cheap, so that was super duper exciting! And we got to walk across an activation pad, to activate our race chip. I’m a nerd and it was my first big run, so I thought it was totally cool and fun! Then we headed out to dinner at a place called RigaTony’s (http://www.rigatonys.com/). It’s a great Italian place in Tempe and a favorite of a friend, Melody, who also runs with us. The pizza was amazing! The fettuccine was good too but the pizza was fantastic!

Back at the hotel, Charlotte and I, who bunked together, got everything ready and realized we were really tired! Luckily I slept really well and felt pretty good when I got up.

RACE DAY:

I set my alarm to go off at 4 am but we were up before that. We caught the shuttle to the bussing area at 4:30 and waited in the frigid, almost hypothermic inducing cold (ok, maybe not that cold but definitely chilly) for the rest of the group to show up, as we had all stayed in 4 different places. It was kind of cold to start but it was supposed to be really warm and since I didn’t want to have to check a bag with extra clothes, I just went in my running skirt and short sleeved shirt, with….. THE ARM WARMERS!!! I was even more excited to have those than I was the day before! And that’s why I said, frigid, almost hypothermic inducing cold. We ended up getting on the bus with just a few of them, Melody, Cyndi, Shane (a friend’s husband who had driven down from Anthem, AZ this morning), Charlotte and myself. We eventually found them at the starting area and were able to get a group picture before the race.

I ran an amazing race for me! Sometimes I really surprise myself with what I end up accomplishing or doing. Normally when I run with the group, I run with ladies who are faster than me, so I run faster. Then when I’m alone, I run slower and I’m not sure why. So I started off and I felt ok. My legs felt kind of heavy and I was really cold. We turned a corner and it got even colder! I thought it was going to be a bad race for me BUT then I started to warm up, my toes weren’t semi-frozen and things started to go better. My time for mile 1 was 10 min. 30 sec. That was fast and I didn’t think I could keep that pace up so I slowed down. My goal was to finish the race in 2 hr. 30 min.

I kept running along, doing intervals, which means I ran for 5 min and fast walked for 1 min. Then ran for 5 min and fast walked for 1 min. over and over for a little over 6 miles. My plan had been to do that for 6 to 7 miles and then just run. So that’s what I did. After my potty break at mile 6 I just ran. And run I did!!! Unbelieveable is what I say. I passed a ton of people twice, as they had all passed me on my potty stop. I eventually caught up with the pace guy for 2 hr. 20 min time and passed him. I WAS GOING TO GET UNDER 2 HR. 20 MIN!! I couldn’t believe it and I didn’t feel really tired or horrible. When I passed mile marker 12, I checked my watch and thought, “I can get under 2 hr. 15 min.” and sped up just a little bit. HOWEVER, MILE 12 TO 13 SEEMED TO TAKE FOREVER!!! It was the longest mile I have ever run! I seriously think it really was longer than a mile. Fortunately it was downhill for a lot of but still….. Finally the finish line was in view and I gave it all I had. I crossed the finish line and I heard, “Oh my gosh, Emily?” I looked over and there was Coach Mindi and some of the other girls. They were totally surprised that I was there so early! I was too! When she said that, I replied, “I know! Who knew?” I really didn’t think I could do that!! My average mile time was 10 min. 20 sec. I guess I can do better than I ever thought I could!
So we waited as we all came in one by one. Then we were all in and it was fabulous. I think we all really did a fabulous job! We got pictures taken, grabbed some free drinks and headed back to the hotels to shower (yay!!!), go eat and then go home!

We had lunch at a place called ChuckBox (http://www.thechuckbox.com/). It is an amazing hamburger/chicken joint right by ASU. I had a huge guacamole bacon swiss burger with onion rings. I didn’t actually think I’d be able to eat it all since it was so big but I was H-U-N-G-R-Y!! It was a pretty messy burger but after that run, it was soooooo good. Well, it would have been good anyway but it was especially good since I was soooooo hungry! Then we came home and it was nice to be home. I bought some salted caramel rolls from a friend who has a business doing that, called Rebel Rolls (http://rebelrolls.wix.com/rebel-rolls). Sooooo good! Tim and the boys weren’t home, so I had one. Then, after they got home, I had another one. SOOO GOOD!!

FRIENDS:

I had a few friends from out of state who were running this race, Melinda, Lindsey and their mom Cathy. I was keeping a keen watch for them and I FOUND THEM!! They passed me while I was in line for the bathrooms before the race started. It was totally fun. Then I saw them running the half and at the finish line! I am better friends with Melinda and we were able to catch up after we had finished the race. I haven’t seen her in years but we have kept in touch. It was sooo great!! Only sad thing is we didn’t get a picture!

Then, as I was wandering around pre-race, I heard someone yell my name and there was another friend,
Katherine! We studied in Spain together in college. Total surprise and a great one at that! I was able to catch up with her too! I LOVE it when things like that happen!

Charlotte: She lives here near me and she is a great friend. We run lots of little races together and after I finish, I always go back to find her and run her in. So I decided to that this race. I didn’t go out very far because I was tired but I was able to run the last little bit with her. There was a blue mat that read the name of the runner on it and when she went over it, she was all alone. Suddenly we heard over the loud speakers, “There goes Charlotte! Almost done with the half! Way to go!” It was sooo cool!! And she did great! She ran a 4 hr. 30 min. half one month ago and today her time was 3 hr. 35 min. So awesome!

Coach Mindi: An amazing lady and friend. Charlotte and I call her Coach Mindi because she has helped us so much with our running. She’s always telling us what to do while preparing for runs, stretches, things to get, about shoes, everything running. Today she ran the last 1.1 miles with Charlotte after running a sub 2 hr. run herself! She is truly amazing! I don’t know how she does it!

And then all the ladies who were up there with us, the ones we run with all the time: Allison, who was the first to sign up, Melody, Cyndi, Kris, Cami, Nancee and Kellie. All amazing ladies!
Enjoy the pictures!

And yes, I am totally sore! The stairs in the house are killers! And I'm pretty sure I'll be waddling tomorrow. If you see me, don't laugh at me! I just can't help it.

Bacon’s Broken Leg

Yep, we’ve had our first broken bone in the family. Thursday afternoon, a little before 4 pm, I took Bacon downstairs to get his blanket. I plopped him in the family room by his blanket and went over to close the curtains in front of the sliding door. The sun was beating in and it was getting warm. Just as I finished, Bacon fell and started crying and screaming. He falls all the time so I wasn’t too worried until I picked him up and he dug his hands into my arms like he was holding on for dear life. Usually he just rests his head against my shoulder long enough to get a few pats on the back and a hug from me before he’s down again. So the hands were a sign something was wrong. He continued to scream for 20+ minutes. I called Tim 3 times before he answered and he came right home. He told me he hadn’t heard anything I said, only Bacon screaming like a maniac.
By the time Tim got home, Bacon was asleep in my arms on the couch. Tim took over getting the other boys to clean up (I was watching 2 boys for a friend when all this happened) and got them dinner. I had called someone we knew and asked him what to look for. He had us go to his chiropractic practice and he took some x-rays. He couldn’t really see anything but said if it was his child, he would definitely get it looked at. It concerned him. (*side note: he called the next day just to see how Bacon was doing and what the diagnosis was. Such a great friend!). He also said to call the hospital and urgent care places to see if they would actually do anything for the leg if it was broken. Glad he told us that because they don’t really do anything. Urgent Care only takes x-ray’s and ER will only put it in a splint.
Friday morning, bright and early I called both places our insurance covers for pediatric orthopedists. We got into the second way, which is all the way across town. A great friend subbed Joy School for me and another agreed to watch Pickle for us. A different friend picked up Pach from school and watched him.
THE DIAGNOSIS: A broken leg (that you could probably get from the title of this post). The correct medical wording, I believe is, Tibial Fracture or more commonly called a Spiral Fracture because of how the leg twists when it breaks.
Dr. Valencia was fabulous! He was so calm, which helped keep Bacon calm. He said he would rather put him in a walking boot rather than a cast because little kids his age put stuff down the casts and they tend to get pretty wet. So after spending most of the afternoon there, we headed through town to get the walking cast. Bacon thought it was pretty cool when he first got it on. When he realized he had to keep it on he was less than thrilled.
He crawled around for a few days and we thought he would eventually just get up and walk. It became apparent that wasn’t going to happen, so one evening we spent an hour walking with him. I walked him to the loft and then said, “Daddy has candy in the office. Let’s go walk to him.” He then walked back to Tim and then the cycle would start all over again. It got him walking and then running and climbing and jumping and doing more than he did before. Nothing slowed him down!
He wore the boot all the time, minus in the bath, until January 8, when he had his check-up. His leg was healing wonderfully, so it was time to wean him off his boot. Nothing was stopping him anymore, not that the boot had stopped him. It only slowed him down for a few days. He was off and running as soon as he could be. Now he just climbs even more. We’ve found him sitting on their dressing, climbing and diving over Pach’s bedrail guard, on the piano, climbing up and flopping over couches, etc. He knows no fear.

5K Jingle Trail Run and 1K Santa’s Little Helper 2012

Today was the 7th annual Jingle Trail Run and Santa’s Little Helper run. It was great! Tim hung out with Bacon and took pictures as I ran with Pach and Pickle on their 1K run. They did pretty good. And they LOVED the little prizes they got at the end.

Then I got ready for my 5K run. It was a great day for the run! A bunch of young boys (9 to 12) were running the race. Last year one of them (Isaac) beat me and this year I told him I was going to be him, that was my goal! Well, I was ahead of him for the first 1 mile and a bit but then he passed me. Darn it! After I finished and found him, he goes, “Ha, I beat you!” and laughed. I told him next year I was going to break his leg so I could beat him. He and his friend laughed even harder. They are fun kids.

My real goal, however, for this race was to finish in under 30 minutes. I smashed that goal. I came in at 28:02 (according to my watch). I was feeling pretty good and going faster than I normally do and when I got to the first mile marker I looked at my watch and it said 9:16. I thought, “OK, a little fast but nice.” I was hurting a little and decided to slow down a bit. A couple minutes later Isaac and his mom passed me. She said to me, “You ran an 8:30 first mile. Way to go.” I told her it was a 9:16 and looked at my watch. Well, my watch said 9:19. After I’d started my stopwatch I clicked it back to normal time. Hahahaha! I slowed down a bit and felt a little better. It’s a crazy course, uphill and downhill, dirt, rock, grass and concrete path, aside from the track that we start and finish on. I am a little sore but I made my real goal and had a great time.

SNOW, SNOW AND MORE SNOW!!!

Everyone says it doesn’t snow in Arizona or at least in southern Arizona but in the
7 1/2 years we’ve been here, it has snowed almost every year. Usually it’s only 1 time and not very much but this year we got A LOT for Tucson standards.
The first time it snowed was Feb. 9 and the boys were so sad they couldn’t play in it! They were all sick, actually we all were. You can see that in my previous post SICKOS!!
A few days later on the 12th it snowed again. It wasn’t quite as much snow as before but it was good enough for the boys! They LOVED it! Bacon not as much as the older two. He came in with wet, cold hands crying. Poor guy! We don’t really have much snow gear for the kids. We don’t need it!
Then on the evening of the 19th, I got a text message warning me of a blizzard coming to our region. We were on blizzard warning until 11 pm on Thursday, according to the message. I laughed so hard when it really was for here! I have a Washington number so I was sure the warning was for up there! Nope!!
Wednesday came and it was really nice outside for most of the morning. A little cloudy and cold but nothing like the blizzard conditions I was warned about. Around noon the weather changed. I looked outside and it was windy and cloudy. I turned around, did 2 things in the checkbook, turned back around and it was full on snowing. Not just flurries or a little falling, full on snowing. The backyard was almost covered in just a few minutes! Still not what I would call a blizzard but way more than anyone here is used too! So I loaded up the kids and friend, got bread from Walgreens and realized it was starting to stick to the road. It was slushy and limited vision of about 40 feet. So I headed to pick Pach up from school. Best decision ever!
We got home and the 3 boys and I played outside in the snow for over an hour. We made 3 baby snowmen. Bacon climbed up the slide and accidentally slid down. Looked freaked out for about 2 seconds, started smiling and laughing and next thing I knew all the boys were flying down the little slide giggling! We threw snowballs and ran around. Bacon’s favorite thing was to grab a bit of snow, eat it and move to a new spot, eat some snow and move on. Over and over. I did get a picture of all 3 boys with the snowmen and then said we’d go out front. I put something inside and heard screaming and crying. I turned around and Bacon was destroying the snowmen! Pounding on them, hitting them and the other boys were upset. They weren’t going to last too long anyway, right?
We walked around the front yard and the block. They LOVED making footprints in the snow and at one point, Bacon was drinking the water off the road! Crazy boy! It stopped snowing for a bit and then started up again. I decided to make a quick run to the grocery store before it got worse. It didn’t, it stopped snowing instead. That night when Tim and I went to bed, it was snowing again. The little car had 2 inches of snow on it. That may not really be that much but for here, it is. It was beautiful! Of course by the time we woke up Thursday morning, a lot of it was gone but it was fun while it lasted!

SICKOS!!!

No one likes being sick and we got hit hard!!! Feb.2 around 11:30 pm, Pach came into our room and said, “Mom, there’s bugs coming out my eyes!” Not quite awake but aware of that probably meant, I growled and took him to the bathroom. Sure enough, PINK EYE!!! He had a ton of gunk coming out his eyes! Luckily we still had drops from when he, myself and Bacon had pink eye in December, so he got drops right away.
Sunday morning I got up with all the boys. I plopped Bacon on the couch, got chocolate milk for everyone and when I handed it to Bacon noticed one of his eye’s was all crusty and gunky. Great! Another case of pink eye! I call it the gift that keeps on giving! It just won’t go away! Bacon also had a very runny nose.
On the night of the 4th Pach was having a hard time breathing due to croupe. I had him in a steamy bathroom and in the cold outdoors. He finally started getting better but I knew I had to do something so on the 5th, I took all 3 boys to the doctor’s.  Bacon wasn’t sleeping very well and his runny nose was almost constant and Pickle I just had checked to make sure he didn’t have anything other than a slight cough.
We left a very chaotic 30 minutes later with a prescription for steroids and amoxicillian. Since Pach had difficulty breathing, he was on steroids for a couple nights. Bacon, it turned out, had a double ear infection. In fact, when the doctor walked into the room and saw him, she said, “He looks like a good candidate for an ear infection.” The tip off was the runny nose. Wish I had known that sooner!
After a few days things seemed to get better. Bacon’s nose dried up and he slept all night again, Pickle never really got sick and Pach got a little better or so we thought. Thursday (after 2 nights of steroids), he started sounding congested. Well, by Friday night I was sleeping sitting up all night in bed with Pach and Pickle, helping them stay elevated so they would quit coughing. Didn’t quite work too well. Tim was in another room, sick, trying to get some sleep and not get me sick. I woke up on the 9th, after having not really slept at all, sick. It took a week but I finally was down.
Monday the 11th, I took Pach to the doctor pleading for something to make him stop coughing at night so we could all sleep! I was desperate and had tried everything! The boys room had a mister in it and a Vick’s Vapor Rub plug in it. I had given them 2 different kinds of cough medicine, put Vick’s Vapor Rub on them, on their feet with socks on and kept them elevated. Nothing worked! I told the doctor all that and she looked at me and said, ‘None of it worked did it? That’s why I never recommend any of that stuff. It doesn’t work.'” Then she prescribed some cough medicine with codine in it. That stuff worked! Finally after over a week of sickos, they were sleeping through the night!!
Tim started getting better, Bacon was fine and Pach and Pickle were finally cough free at night! But I got sick. I ended up going to the urgent care on the 14th and found out I had an ear infection! That explained why my ear and throat and everything on the right side of my head hurt! I am still taking my medicine and we are all actually better! We even made it to church finally!
Honestly, I am so tired of people being sick! In December we had a broken leg, 3 cases of pink eye, 2 bouts of the flu and my sister, my mom and my dad all got sick while they were visiting for Christmas! It’s just time for all this to be OVER!!!!
